“Finis Tenebris” or “End of darkness”, as the Latin phrase translates, can be considered a rather significant work as documentation for the current time we live in. Minnette Vári, takes us through a moment of resurgence in her video artwork, where a single charcoal mark on the paper, ripples into an army of many more. As the charcoal dots continue to ‘infect’ the pages, it becomes difficult to visualise anything but the gloom that has wiped over the surface.
…until a small glimmer that signals the end of darkness appears. “Finis Tenebris”, the artwork says, and with that, light is called to enter the image, and a child-like faith is restored. Once again, a world of endless possibilities is given to the pages. Here we see that even when the work yields itself to complete darkness, if it is left to the hands of the right artist, dawn will eventually break. What was once a terrifying thunderstorm, will quieten down, come to an end, and the puddles left in residue will become birdbaths for chirping, singing, and welcome a new era filled with light.
You will find this beautiful work by Minnette Vári, alongside a collective of other inspiring South African artists as part of a group exhibition titled “Cure” presented by the UJ Moving Cube initiative.
