The remote, serene yet pristine location of this residency is ideal for self- reflection. It is geographically removed from the fast-paced life, bright city light and the non-stop busy pace of Metropolitan environments. Very often in the big city, one goes through the motions of work, networking at a break necking pace. Self-reflection, art research and the appreciation for a sustainable future living in a natural environment unspoiled by human inventions is a rare and precious gift.
The opportunity to do deep thinking, to hear oneself think, is priceless! This residency impacted my professional trajectory as an artist positively. Everything came to stand still allowing me to see society and its intricate interface with art clearly. The residency provided me the opportunity to experiment with new processes and to generate new perspectives. This led me to reconsider what I really want to be creating. It was for me a period of inspiration and from this residency, creative breakthroughs in my artworks emerged.
Working alongside Lindokuhle Zwane, uninterrupted conversation on our works resulted in dynamic creative concepts and intellectual exchanges. These exchanges pushed my artistic boundaries and diversified my perspectives. From these exchanges, and the creative process we shared, future collaboration has been forged.
During the residency, what stood out above everything was the robust, invaluable insights and guidance I received from the sponsors as my art project progressed. This re-affirmed to me that art is an engaged practice.
