Loup Lejeune:

Deeply nourished my artistic reflection

Deeply nourished my artistic reflection

Over the course of 10 weeks, I had the opportunity to take part in a unique artistic residency in South Africa. I explored several emblematic regions, most notably the heart of the Vredefort crater — an asteroid impact site formed over 2 billion years ago. This place, steeped in geological history, deeply nourished my artistic reflection. I worked with locally sourced minerals, true witnesses of that ancient cataclysm. These raw materials, marked by the violence of the impact, inspired a series of terrazzo-based images. I reinterpreted this technique to incorporate fragments of both stellar and terrestrial memory. This dialogue between art and geology allowed me to explore notions of trace, time, and transformation.

The residency was also an opportunity for rich exchanges with researchers, South African artists, and the local community. I warmly thank the SAFFCA Foundation for its support, and in particular Pierre Lombard, Xavier Huyberechts, as well as Lisette & Gregory Barnes for their generous and inspiring hospitality. This intense experience marked an important milestone in my journey, both artistically and personally.
